If You Have to Evacuate

* Listen to local radio station KVMR (89.5 FM) for current info. If you have internet, check YubaNet Fire News and Happening Now.

* Agree on a safe meeting place in case anyone gets separated. Do not rely on cell phones as cell towers may be down.

* Designate who will be taking care of animals and/or following up on their care.

* During a fire, do not confine your animals to the barn as they are at risk of smoke inhalation.

* Cats are at high risk because they tend to hide during a fire. Put them in a bathroom FIRST. It's a small area and they will be easier to crate when you're ready. Don't forget to include cat litter and newspaper for them in their evacuation kit.

* I.D. your animals! Livestock crayon, microchip, spray paint, stock tag or luggage tag on collars/halters, nail polish.

NOTE: An evacuation team may be able to help you. Call 530-265-7880 for assistance.

The Nevada County Fairgrounds is usually available for housing animals displaced by a disaster, when NCVDRT has mobilized. Bring animals to Gate 8, located on Brighton St near the intersection with McCourtney Rd (see map).

Volunteers will direct you on parking and check in for the animal evacuation center.

Other locations are available and will be used as needed. It is possible the fairgrounds are in an evacuation zone.
